Nicaragua
Central America
Year opened: 2004
Nicaragua has experienced significant growth in the evangelical Christian church, despite challenges this nation has faced. In 1960 1.8% of the population was considered evangelical, which had risen to 21.4% by the year 2000. Seventy-nine percent of Nicaraguans are considered Roman Catholic, and 15% adhere to Protestant faiths.
The Sandinista guerrillas’ control of the government from 1979 until 1990 left the nation’s economy severely damaged. Hurricane Mitch, which struck in 1998, further demolished the country and worsened the economic situation. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and has the most unequal distribution of wealth. More than 50% of the population lives below the poverty line. Mission Society missionaries work alongside national pastors to plant churches and minister to the marginalized through medical care and children’s ministry.
